Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to

  • effectively approach and analyze academic texts.
  • recognize and use linkers, transitions and parallel structures
  • recognize and use subject specific terminology, word forms, idioms and discourse markers.
  • paraphrase sentences and   summarize long texts
  • organize information using charts, graphs, tables and outlines
  • write paragraphs relevant to their undergraduate studies in terms of theme and genre
  • write reaction/response essays on topics relevant to their undergraduate studies
  • perform guided writing tasks, such as CVs,  job applications, and intention letters
  • participate in discussions/ arguments/conversations
  • demonstrate understandable pronunciation
  • design an oral presentation based on academic texts with a coherent beginning, middle, and end.
  • deliver an oral presentation with the use of effective body language, appropriate visual aids, and proper language patterns.
     
References: No specific course book will be followed. Course materials  are to be   provided by the course group instructor(s).
 
Method of Instruction: Lecture; team/class discussions; communicative/meaninful language exercises;  in- and out-of-class reading/writing tasks; presentations; library research; online research; workshops; role plays.
 
Length and period: 4 hrs a week, 56 hrs in total / one academic semester, 14 weeks in total
 

Attendance: Students are required to attend classes, practise sessions, and have examinations. Minimum required attendance is 70% for all class sessions per semester, which  makes up 17 hours of absence at most . A student who does not fulfill the requirement for attendance is not allowed to take the final exam for the semester concerned and  is to repeat the course. Students who miss an exam will not be given a make-up exam unless they submit  an approved medical report or any other official document  proving their excuse.
 
Grading: - midterm exam: 30%
                - active participation during the classes, attitude  toward the
                  course, preparation for the pre-assigned   chapters,
                  assignments handed in due time : 15% 
                - delivery of presentation: 15 %           
                - final exam: 40%
*  Students are required to submit assignments in due time. Late submissions without a valid excuse   will be panalized.
Each student is required to be present on the assigned day of his/her presentation. If any absenteeism occurs, his/her presentation can only be delayed for one week, resulting in 5 point loss off the total grade allocated for the presentation.
